PlayStation Plus Prices Are Going Up in Another Country

Summary

  • PlayStation Plus prices in Canada have increased by up to 22.6%, impacting all three tiers.
  • Many countries have seen PS Plus prices go up recently, including Brazil, Mexico, and Argentina.
  • Sony attributes the price hikes to global market conditions.

Subscription prices for PlayStation Plus have just seen a big hike in Canada, the latest country in a long list to experience increases in the cost of membership in the digital gaming subscription service. PlayStation Plus members in Canada should expect to pay up to 22.6 percent more in annual fees moving forward as Sony’s streaming service undergoes price restructuring.

Prior to the recent announcements, the last big price increase for PlayStation Plus came in 2023. That increase also affected all three of its tiers, with the annual cost of an Essential membership jumping up by $20, a roughly 33 percent increase over its previous price.

PS Plus Extra and Premium have some of the greatest PlayStation games from across the console brand’s history, and here are the best of the best.

Information on the official Canadian PlayStation website has revealed the new pricing, with annual costs for the PlayStaion Plus Essential tier at $109.99, the Extra tier at $189.99, and the Premium tier at $249.99. Based on the previous pricing models, those new values equate to an extra $15 for Essential, $35 for Extra, and $35 for Premium, with the largest percentage increase hitting the middle of those three tiers. Subscribers will still be able to pay in monthly or quarterly installments instead, though doing so will cost them as much as $75 extra per year, with the biggest hit going to monthly Premium subscribers.

PlayStation Plus Prices are Going Way Up for Canadians

Canada is the latest in a growing list of countries to see its PlayStation Plus subscription prices on the rise. About a week ago, PlayStation Plus prices in Latin America saw big jumps of up to 21 percent depending on the service tier. These changes have affected 16 different countries, including Brazil, Mexico, and Argentina. Sony’s leadership has indicated in these cases that the reasons for raising subscription prices were tied to conditions in the global market and an assurance that the company would still be able to afford to offer access to high-quality games for its members.

The rising price of video games can be felt throughout the industry as the cost of developing and producing triple-A-quality games has risen significantly more over the years than the prices players pay for them. This extends beyond streaming services, with the recent announcement that some Nintendo Switch 2 games are going to be really expensive, priced at $90 for physical versions and $80 for digital downloads. Additionally, former Sony Computer Entertainment president Shawn Layden has recently gone on the record, saying that game prices should have seen incremental increases over the past several console generations, and the size of price hikes now seems to be picking up the slack for that historical cost stagnation.
