Excitement for Mario Kart World has been furthered by the Direct of the same name, showing off a ton of new features from tracks to in-game mechanics to new items you can use to inevitably frustrate your friends and family.
Decades of Mario Kart games can leave you wondering what’s next for the series. Mario Kart World speeds around the corner, hops onto a rail, and grinds its way into your living room with enough innovations to fill Bowser’s Castle.
The Mario Kart World Direct told us everything we needed to know, so let’s share the details.
Mario Kart World Direct Shows Off New Features

A ton of features we already knew about were given a closer inspection during the Direct. There was a deeper look at 24-player races, the new Knockout format, the interconnected nature of courses, and GameChat integration.
Free Roam Surprises
Mario Kart World‘s open world encourages you to explore. If you do, you can find Gas Stations with unlockable items, and there’s a ton of hidden cons, switches, and secrets to find.
New Courses
Mario Bros. Circuit, Crown City, Starview Peak, and Boo Cinema represent the new breed in Mario Kart World. But don’t worry, Nintendo isn’t one for shunning nostalgia, so say hello to returning circuits to bolster the star-studded championship-worthy selection.
New Items
We all have a fondness for throwing shells, but it’s time to ramp up the repertoire. The new Coin Shell dispenses coins in front of you—but anyone can claim them! Whereas the Ice Flower (to the shock of no one) can freeze players and send them for a spin. But a Mega Mushroom will make you grow very hench very quickly and allow you to smash everyone out of the way.
New Techniques
Charge Jump allows you to jump over usually hazardous obstacles, whereas Rewind is a game-changing inclusion allowing you to quickly undo a mistake. Add this to the new rail-grinding move ripped out of a Tony Hawk’s game, and you have many new ways to terrorize the track.
Rainbow Road Confirmed
Last but not least, everyone’s favorite course is secure—we have a new Rainbow Road. We’re not sure what it entails or how many versions we’ll see, but Rainbow Road is back!
