Fans of Critical Role’s Exandria Video Game Have a Great Way to Pass the Time Before Release

Critical Role has made a lot of fans eager, as cast member and CEO Travis Willingham recently confirmed that an official video is currently in the works. For a decade, Critical Role has been a go-to for many longtime and newer Dungeons and Dragons fans. Led by voice acting veteran and DM Matthew Mercer, Critical Role features some of the most beloved voice actors in the industry, like Ashley Johnson and Laura Bailey.

Now that a Critical Role video game is imminent, many fans are wondering about the finer details of the project. Willingham has kept most of the details secretive for now, but he has at least confirmed that it will take place in Exandria. This confirmation is exciting, but there is currently no indication as to when the secretive project will launch. Thankfully, Critical Role fans have a great way to pass the time until then with the Call of the Netherdeep adventure module.

Call of the Netherdeep Can Hold Off Critical Role Fans Ahead of the Exandria Video Game

A Unique Setting Filled With Mystery

Since this is a Critical Role story, Call of the Netherdeep indeed takes place in Exandria, but there is a fun shake-up in the environment for players to look forward to. Much of the campaign takes place underwater, putting a priority on submerged exploration. Before going beneath the surface, players have to properly prepare for the expedition, and once beneath the water, they are greeted by an oppressive and horror-tinged atmosphere.

These underwater dungeons lead players to Alyxian, an Apotheon who has entombed himself. Players will have to unravel the reason behind this, adding a fun layer of mystery to the story. Critical Role has brought great fantasy stories to life, and Call of the Netherdeep stays true to the franchise’s hardcore fantasy, while also adding a touch of Lovecraftian energy.

Call of the Netherdeep was released back in 2022 and is designed for the 5th edition. The campaign is meant to take players from level 3 to level 12.

A Race Against Time

As an extra layer to the story, Call of the Netherdeep features a rival party that players must race against. This rival party is in search of the same things, presenting players with a sense of urgency. Depending on the actions of the players, this rival group can be befriended or antagonized, which could greatly affect the finale of the campaign. A variety of endings with different outcomes brings big consequences for players, making Call of the Netherdeep a fun, but challenging experience. It may be a great time for a Critical Role video game to finally be brought to life, but this adventure module is also a great reminder of the franchise’s storytelling.

Campaign 3 of Critical Role ended on February 6, 2025. Campaign 4 has yet to be announced.

More News About Critical Role’s Video Game Ambitions Hopefully Comes Sooner, Rather Than Later

Right now, Critical Role fans are in a bit of a drought. Between the ending of Campaign 3 earlier this year and no clear insight into the teased video game, there are bound to be a lot of Critical Role lovers craving more content. Thankfully, Call of the Netherdeep supplies Dungeons and Dragons fans with a fresh story that’s set in a familiar world.

This blend of familiarity and newness might make Call of the Netherdeep the perfect way to scratch that itch. Campaign 3 may be over, but the future of Critical Role is looking bright, and Call of the Netherdeep is available for players to keep the world of Exandria alive.
