  • Switch 2 GameCube controllers are not compatible with the original Nintendo Switch console.

Nintendo has commented on Nintendo Switch 2 GameCube controller compatibility, revealing that the new controller may have “some issues” while playing games outside the Nintendo GameCube – Nintendo Classics app. The wireless GameCube controller was revealed during the April 2 Nintendo Direct, which focused on Nintendo Switch 2, the console’s features, and several upcoming games.

Two tiers of the Nintendo Switch Online subscription service are available for $19.99 and $49.99 a year, respectively. At the base tier, subscribers get online multiplayer support and classic titles from the NES, SNES, and Game Boy. The more expensive tier, Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack, offers the base Nintendo Switch Online subscription, free DLC for various Nintendo Switch games like Splatoon 2 and Animal Crossing: New Horizons, and access to classic games from the Nintendo 64, Game Boy Advance, and Sega Genesis consoles. Expansion Pack subscribers will also have access to Nintendo GameCube titles on Nintendo Switch 2 at launch, such as SoulCalibur 2, The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker, and F-Zero GX.

Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller Has One Big Advantage Over Original

The Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller will have a lot of similarities to the original Switch Pro Controller, but it has one big advantage.

The Nintendo Switch 2 GameCube controller may have “some issues when playing other games,” according to a Nintendo representative who responded to an inquiry from Nintendo Life. The GameCube controller is designed for use with the Nintendo Classics app for GameCube games, and it’s an optional way to play those games alongside the new Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller. However, since the GameCube controllers don’t have all the buttons and features found on other controllers, there may be some compatibility issues with other games on Nintendo Switch 2. What’s more, Nintendo confirmed that the new GameCube controller can only be used on Nintendo Switch 2, and it is not compatible with the original Nintendo Switch console.

Nintendo Switch 2 GameCube Controllers May Face Compatibility Issues in Other Games Due to Lack of Buttons and Features

It’s worth noting that wired controllers from the original Nintendo GameCube console may be used on Nintendo Switch 2 with the GameCube Controller Adapter. The original Joy-Con and Pro Controller are forwards compatible on Nintendo Switch 2, but the controllers may run into similar compatibility issues as the GameCube controller.

Nintendo adds classic games to Nintendo Switch Online every month, so this trend will continue before and after the launch of Nintendo Switch 2. After the new console releases on June 5, players can expect more GameCube games to join the Expansion Pack tier at a later date, including Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance, Chibi-Robo, Pokemon Colosseum, Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness, and Super Mario Sunshine.
