Baldur’s Gate 3 Reaches Impressive Player Numbers Following Patch 8 Launch

Summary

  • Baldur’s Gate 3 gets a final major update, Patch 8, boosting the player count to over 169,000.
  • Patch 8 brings crossplay, photo mode, and 12 new subclasses, satisfying fan anticipation.
  • Larian Studios CEO Swen Vincke hints at future projects post-BG3, with new RPGs in development.

The final major update for Baldur’s Gate 3 is finally out, and it’s led to a noticeable uptick in players. Larian Studios’ RPG quickly became one of 2023’s most popular games when it launched and largely swept the competition in the following awards season, and it seems it still has some life left in it. While support for Baldur’s Gate 3 may be coming to a close, players are still flocking to the game.

On April 15, 2025, Larian officially launched Baldur’s Gate 3‘s Patch 8, which will be the last major update the studio releases for the game. That finality was not the only thing notable about the patch, though. It also brought crossplay functionality, a photo mode, and a whopping 12 new subclasses, all of which were hotly anticipated by fans, so when the update went live, players came pouring back into the Forgotten Realms.

As Larian Studios CEO Swen Vincke shared on Twitter, BG3 player counts spiked after Patch 8’s launch. While the game’s concurrent player count on Steam sat at 62,101 the day before the patch, it jumped to a peak of over 169,000 in the days following the update. Vincke expressed gratitude that the patch “got a lot of people playing again” and said he believes the title will continue to do well, thanks to support from the modding community. Keeping up with updates has proven challenging for Baldur’s Gate 3 mods, but now that Larian is stepping back, it should be easier for modders to keep up and bring some stability to the fan-created content scene.

Vincke also took the time to look forward, now that BG3‘s last major update is out. With Patch 8 out of the way, Vincke said the team has room to focus on “the next big thing,” presumably meaning the studio’s next game. Hasbro and Wizards of the Coast are planning a Baldur’s Gate 3 sequel, but Larian won’t be in charge of it. Vincke didn’t give any hint as to what fans can expect from the company in the future, but admitted that it has some imposing shoes to fill after the success of BG3.

Last year, Larian opened a new studio in Warsaw to help with the development of its next titles. The company has confirmed that it’s working on two different RPGs and that these are “very ambitious,” but any details beyond that remain scarce. Development on both is likely still in the earliest stages, so there may not be much news for a while, but now that Larian is moving away from Baldur’s Gate, updates about these projects could come out a little faster.
