Does Joel Die in The Last of Us Season 2?

The Last of Us Season 2 follows the plot of the second video game, but does make a few alterations. With that in mind, did the showrunners decide to have Joel die?

The Last of Us television adaptation is a hit sensation, as the first season garnered the largest audience for an HBO debut season in network history. Season 2 raises the bar. It has been revealed that the first episode of The Last of Us’ second season saw a 10% viewership boost over the first season.

Unfortunately for fans, The Last of Us Season 2 consists of only seven episodes, compared to the nine that aired in Season 1. That being said, this season makes the most of its limited screen time.

What Happens to Joel in The Last of Us Season 2 Episode 2?

In The Last of Us Season 2 Episode 2, Abby tortures Joel and kills him right in front of Ellie.

In the final episode of Season 1, Joel killed an unarmed doctor and 18 Firefly soldiers to rescue Ellie from being sacrificed to create a cure for the disease that turns people Infected.

Abby, the daughter of the doctor, along with a few remaining Fireflies, set out to seek revenge. Coincidentally, Joel saves Abby from a horde of infected, and she guides him to the group’s cabin to escape a snowstorm. From there, Abby proceeds to shoot Joel in the knee with a shotgun before brutally killing him with a golf club.

Ellie manages to find Joel, but it’s too late, as all she can do is helplessly watch on as Abby delivers the final blow.

Is Joel’s death different in The Last of Us Part 2 video game?

No, Joel’s death in The Last of Us Part 2 is very similar to how it happened in The Last of Us Season 2.

Abby kills Joel in the show and the video game, and does so in the same log cabin after escaping a snowstorm. Joel is also killed by a golf club in The Last of Us Part 2, but the show goes one step further with the execution and has Abby stab him in the neck rather than just beating him.

After the credits rolled, the television cast and crew reflected on Joel’s death and how it was handled.

Bella Ramsey, who portrays Ellie, admitted, “I actually sobbed my little heart out. It was the first time I’ve ever cried from reading a piece of writing.

“It was as hard for us to write and to shoot as it was, I think, probably for a lot of people to watch,” executive producer Craig Mazin said. “But this story is about how we all deal with those moments which confront us in life.

Pascal explained, “I think that if it’s incredibly painful for people, that’s obviously a brilliant achievement of the storytelling.”

The absence of Joel and his presence hurts, but his death sets up a compelling rivalry between Abby and Ellie that the showrunners are excited to explore.

“Abby has lost her dad, and now, inadvertently, Abby has created those same nightmares for another character,” executive producer Neil Druckman said. “This event will change all the characters we know forever from this point on.”
