Final Fantasy 14 Composer Comments on Whether a Rhythm Minigame Could Work in the Game

Summary

  • Final Fantasy 14 composer Masayoshi Soken said adding rhythm minigames would be difficult to manage due to technical limitations.
  • Soken stated that the MMORPG genre overall is incompatible with timing-based technologies.
  • Soken stated that the Dancing Green raid battle required new technologies to pull off.

Final Fantasy 14 composer Masayoshi Soken stated in an interview that rhythm-based minigames would be difficult to add to the MMORPG due to technical limitations. Soken noted that, despite Final Fantasy 14 recently implementing a raid boss that uses sound cues, implementing rhythm minigames would likely be fraught with difficulties.

In Final Fantasy 14‘s Seekers of Eternity update, one of the main features of the patch is the second tier of the Arcadion raid series, the Cruiserweight division. The first fight of the Cruiserweight series pits players against Dancing Green, a male Viera with the feral soul of a toad and a ring aesthetic inspired by disco and funk music of the 1970s. Final Fantasy 14 players must be fast on their feet throughout the fight and time their movements with the battle’s theme, “Ride the Rhythm,” to avoid Dancing Green’s snappy attacks. Additionally, Patch 7.2 reintroduced Hells’ Kier as an Unreal trial, which has an intermission mechanic based on Dance Dance Revolution that requires players to rotate their avatars to match the arrows on the arena floor.

Final Fantasy 14 Releases New Outfits, But There’s A Catch

Square Enix reveals two new outfit ensembles for Final Fantasy 14 players to collect, though each cosmetic offer carries some caveats.

Though Final Fantasy 14 is open to more past Final Fantasy callbacks, adding rhythm-based challenges outside of combat seems less likely. In a PCGamesN interview, Soken said that Final Fantasy 14‘s technical limitations would make adding a rhythm minigame difficult, if not impossible, to manage. Soken stated that the Dancing Green raid encounter required some new engineering techniques to pull off, but he was pleased with how the final results turned out. Although members of Creative Studio 3’s sound team have expressed interest in making music for a rhythm game, Soken said, “When we think about that, the MMO genre ties really badly with the technologies that are needed to have good timing.”

Final Fantasy 14 Will Not Likely Add Rhythm Minigames

In short, player movements in any activity are dependent on a player’s connection to Final Fantasy 14‘s game servers, which may vary based on factors like location and ISP. Like other online games available today, Final Fantasy 14 is sometimes targeted by DDoS attacks on the game’s servers, which can cause player movements and actions to behave erratically or lead to server disconnections. Ergo, a DDoS attack would also make connection-dependent rhythm minigames in Final Fantasy 14 almost impossible to manage.

While the Final Fantasy series is no stranger to the rhythm genre, Final Fantasy 14 players should not expect a rhythm minigame to be implemented anytime soon. Only time will tell what Square Enix has planned for Final Fantasy 14‘s future content updates.
