One second, we had only had the free-to-play RuneScape MMO, the next, Jagex added Dragonwilds to give long-time fans of the series something new to consider. If you’re wondering if RuneScape: Dragonwilds costs anything, you’ve come to the right place.
We knew RuneScape: Dragonwilds was heading into Early Access in 2025, but we didn’t know it would be a shadow drop. And yet Jagex Ltd thought it would shock us all by doing just this. Dragonwilds sent fans wild by debuting on Steam through Early Access on April 15.
RuneScape has retained a large player base for years through its free-to-play model. Does it mean Dragonwilds follows suit?
Is RuneScape: Dragonwilds Free-to-Play?

RuneScape: Dragonwilds is not free-to-play and does require a fee to play Early Access.
Subscriptions and fees are an option for RuneScape players. It’s a reason why the series has grossed billions in profit and remains so consistently popular all these years later.
The polish and premium-looking nature of RuneScape: Dragonwilds did raise question marks as to whether or not it would be free. The game shadow dropped onto the Steam store, and this question was soon answered.
How Much is RuneScape: Dragonwilds on Steam?
You need to pay $29.99 or £24.99 to play RuneScape: Dragonwilds Early Access on Steam.
It doesn’t matter how much money a company has or makes, it can always earn more. It makes sense for Jagex to charge for Early Access and, hopefully, reinvest that commitment back into Dragonwilds as the community helps test the game before its full launch.
On the plus side, if you pay for Early Access in the game’s first 30 days, you get a special “RuneScape: Dragonwilds Early Adopter Soundtrack,” including the following items:
- Pioneer’s Scarf
- Pioneer’s Tapestry
- Pioneer’s Cape
- 2 Pieces of music from the game.
If you purchase Early Access after the period, you won’t be eligible for the aforementioned bonus content.
If you invest in RuneScape: Dragonwilds early, make sure you check out the Dragonwilds Roadmap and its array of future content in the pipeline. We’ve also got news on its platforms—which might appeal to PlayStation and Xbox owners.
