Gege Wanted Megumi To Be The Main Character At First
The story of Jujutsu Kaisen has always been fascinating to the fans. It goes without saying that JJK is one of the very best stories of recent years and its incredible popularity is proof of that. Having become so popular, it is no surprise that JJK is home to some of the most amazing characters. In fact, certain JJK characters are iconic and known all over the world, such as Gojo Satoru.
There are also other characters that are incredibly popular, such as the protagonist, Yuji Itadori. However, in Gege’s original ideas for JJK, Yuji wasn’t the protagonist of the series at all. This might sound surprising to the fans, but the author had someone else lined up to lead the story, and it is yet another character who is very beloved by fans all over the world.
Gege Wanted Megumi To Be The Main Character At First
- Megumi Was Important In JJK Prototype
- He Was Supposed To Be Sukuna’s Vessel
It isn’t surprising at all to know that Gege Akutami had his own drafts for Jujutsu Kaisen before the story began serialization in Jump. A lot of authors have a bunch of prototype stories or one-shots that come out before the actual story. Gege is no different in that regard. In his original story, it wasn’t Yuji Itadori who was the protagonist, but another one of his teammates, Megumi Fushiguro. For those who don’t know, Megumi is one of Yuji’s best friends and a main character in JJK. He plays a massive role throughout the story, right until the very end. At first, Gege considered him to be the perfect protagonist for the story. In fact, in Gege’s early drafts, Megumi was going to be the vessel for Ryomen Sukuna, the King of Curses, instead of Yuji Itadori.

Along with Megumi was Tsumiki, and she too was supposed to be a part of the main group in Chapter 1 of the series. Of course, fans might wonder if Yuji was relevant in the story, and the answer to that is yes! Yuji Itadori also existed in the original draft. However, he was a side character. Yuji was supposed to support Megumi and have a weak relationship with Sukuna, presumably by blood, as is the case in the main story.
How Gege Changed His Mind
Gege’s Original Idea Influenced His Story Still
While this idea was certainly fun, Gege found it too boring and decided to scrap it altogether. Megumi was then made a side character, and Yuji Itadori was made the main character of the story, and that’s the story that fans know JJK to be today.

Megumi Became Sukuna’s Vessel
Still, it can’t be said that Gege’s initial idea didn’t affect the plot at all. Fans know for a fact that JJK’s final section took several twists and turns. Megumi Fushiguro ended up becoming the vessel for Sukuna anyway, and this was something that Gege says he had always planned from the beginning. As such, a safe assumption would be that Gege ended up deciding this plotline for Megumi right after the switch.
There are also many other ways the initial ideas affected JJK, and hopefully, Gege will reveal all that to the fans slowly.
Jujutsu Kaisen’s last chapter, JJK 271, was finally released on September 29, 2024. Fans can read the series on the Manga Plus and the Shonen Jump apps.
