Nintendo Forced To Disappoint Millions of Switch 2 Customers Seeking a Pre-Order

In an update posted on social media, Shuntaro Furukawa revealed that pre-order application figures for the Switch 2 console via the My Nintendo Store have ‘far exceeded expectations’. It was confirmed that 2.2 million people in Japan alone had applied to the ‘lottery sale’ on the store.

Because of that overwhelming number of applications, Furukawa has advised that ‘a significant number of customers will not be selected when the winners are announced’ tomorrow, April 24.

Out of Luck

The post on social media from Nintendo’s president might not be what fans were hoping for, but it’s the one they’ve got.

Furukawa wrote:

We received an extremely large number of applications, approximately 2.2 million people in Japan alone.

However, this number far exceeds our expectations, and far exceeds the number of Nintendo Switch 2 consoles that can be delivered from the My Nintendo Store on June 5th. Therefore, unfortunately, we expect that a significant number of customers will not be selected when the winners are announced tomorrow, April 24th.

It was then announced that those unsuccessful in the first lottery would be automatically entered in the second lottery, but even those aren’t guaranteed to land a successful preorder.

Even including the quantity for the second lottery sale, we cannot fulfill all of the applications we received.

We deeply apologize for not being able to meet your expectations despite our prior preparations.

We plan to continue producing and shipping a considerable number of Nintendo Switch 2 units in the future. We apologize for the delay in our ability to meet your expectations, and we appreciate your understanding.

This was hardly unexpected news, as the response to the Nintendo Switch 2 reveal was nothing short of monumental. It’s important to stress that other retailers will still offer pre-orders for the Switch 2 console, but the My Nintendo Store is inundated with applications and simply cannot handle the load.
