During the Chorrol Recommendation quest that’s part of the Mages Guild questline in The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered, the Hero will be asked to recover a book called Fingers of the Mountain from Cloud Top, northwest of Chorrol.
Both Teekeeus, the chapter head of the Chorrol Mages Guild and Earana, the High Elf who knows the book’s current location, want to get Fingers of the Mountain and the secrets it holds. Depending on who gets the book, the quest’s outcome is different.

Black Soul Gems are the largest soul gems found in Oblivion Remastered, but they are rather unique and rare to obtain.
Should You Give Fingers of the Mountain to Teekeeus or Earana in Oblivion Remastered
The overall outcome of the quest, Chorrol Recommendation, is largely the same regardless of whether you give the book to Teekeeus or Earana. Both will ask you to steal the book back and give it to them, but the quest rewards will be almost identical.
If You Give Fingers of the Mountain to Teekeeus
- Give the book to Teekeeus, and the Chorrol Recommendation quest will be marked complete. You will get a Recommendation Letter from Teekeeus and +2 Fame Points.
- Talk with Earana and tell her that you’ve given the book to Teekeeus. She will demand that you steal it back for her. This will start the quest Fingers of the Mountain, Part II.
- Steal the book back from Teekeeus by lockpicking his chambers on the third level of the Chorrol Mages Guild Hall (Mages Guild Living Quarters). It’s the room with a door on the right as soon as you enter.
- Give Fingers of the Mountain to Earana and she will tell you to come back after 24 hours in order to get the reward (details below).
There is no need to wait for Earana to ask you to steal the book before stealing it from Teekeeus. As soon as you give Teekeeus the book, you can immediately pickpocket him to get the book back, go back to Earana, and progress the quest. Alternatively, follow him to his chambers and loot the book from his chest; he doesn’t lock it so there is no lockpicking required.
You do not need to complete Fingers of the Mountain, Part II to get the Chorrol Recommendation.
If you’re not caught stealing the book, Teekeeus will not be able to pin the crime on you. When the next time you meet him, he will comment, “Curious that you should inquire about it, as it has recently gone missing. You wouldn’t happen to know anything about that, would you?.” However, that’s the extent of this interaction and there will be no repercussions later on.
If you don’t want Fingers of the Mountain, reply “No, thank you.” when Earana asks you to steal the book back. This will complete the quest.
If You Give Fingers of the Mountain to Earana
- Give the book directly to Earana, and you will gain +1 Fame Points and she will start the quest, “Fingers of the Mountain, Part II”.
- Talk to Teekeeus and he will ask you to steal the book from Earana.
- Steal the book back from Earana’s room in the Grey Mare and give it back to Teekeeus.
- He will now give you the Chorrol Recommendation.
Regardless of whether you steal the book from Earana or not, the Fingers of the Mountain, Part II quest will progress in the same way.
The only difference between giving the bookp to Teekeeus versus Earana is the amount of Fame Points you get. If you give to Teekeeus first, you get +2 Fame Points, but if you give to Earana, you get +1 Fame Points. You will get a Chorrol Recommendation as long as Teekeeus eventually gets the book.

How To Get Wabbajack in Oblivion Remastered (Sheogorath Shrine Quest)
The Prince of Madness has grown bored in Cyrodiil, and tasks Oblivion Remastered players with causing chaos so they can get the Wabbajack early.
Fingers of the Mountain, Part II Guide
After you give Earana the book, wait 24 hours and talk to her again, she can either be found outside the Mages Guild Hall or in the Grey Mare Inn. She will reward the player by giving “Earana’s Notes,” which describe how to obtain a custom Shock spell named Fingers of the Mountain.
To get this spell, you will need two things:
- Any Shock Spell
- A Welkynd Stone
Fast travel back to Cloud Top and look for the broken marble pillar next to the charred corpse where you found the book. Cast a Shock spell on the pillar (you can use a Scroll). A lightning bolt will strike you down as soon as you cast the lightning spell, dealing massive damage. This effect can be negated by Spell Absorption effects (Spelldrinker Amulet, Atronach Birthsign, etc.) or by using defensive enchanted gear.
If you survive, a pop-up will appear stating, “I was struck by lightning, and have been granted a powerful new spell.” The spell in question is Fingers of the Mountain. You can check its effects by going to Magic and looking under the Target tab.
Is Fingers of the Mountain Worth Using?
Fingers of the Mountain is a badly optimized custom spell with a huge magicka cost. After players unlock the Altar of Spellcrafting, either by advancing to Apprentice in the Mages Guild or by upgrading Frostcrag Spire, they will be able to craft better custom spells of their own. In the short term, however, Fingers of the Mountain serves as a potent ranged lightning spell that you get for free.
