Oblivion Remastered: Where To Go First

In The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered, where to go first is a difficult question to answer because the game is so open-ended. From the moment you exit the Imperial Sewers and complete the tutorial, the game sets you loose to forge your destiny as you see fit.

First time playing Oblivion Remastered? These essential tips help new players explore, fight, and grow stronger fast.

There are two particularly locations that players should go to first, though – Vilverin and Sideways Cave, two dungeons that are right next to the Imperial Sewer. But after that, figuring out what to do first in Oblivion Remastered is ultimately up to what your goals in the game are.

Whether you want to follow the main quest, pick up side quests, join factions, or embark on an adventure entirely your own, there are plenty of places to go first in this long-awaited remaster.

Cross The River & Enter Vilverin

An Ayleid Ruin Inhabited By Bandits

Oblivion Remastered Where To Go First Vilverin

The first thing you will see upon exiting the Imperial Sewers is the Ayleid ruin of Vilverin, just across the river to the east. Ayleid Ruins are spread throughout Cyrodiil, but you can’t miss this one as you exit the tutorial area.

This particular Ayleid Ruin is overrun with bandits, two of whom are standing watch outside. Deal with these two, or avoid them, and enter Vilverin to find more bandits and lots of loot, including a pile of Welkynd Stones, which can be used to regain Magicka.

Go South To Find Sideways Cave

A Cave Full Of Loot & Imps

Another nearby starter dungeon Oblivion Remastered players should go to first is Sideways Cave. From the Imperial Sewer exit, turn right and up the hill to find Sideways Cave. Deal with the lone Imp just outside and head in to find a surprisingly deep cavern complex that leads to an underground lake.

Head To Weynon Priory

Start The Oblivion Main Quest Southeast of Chorrol

Weynon Priory is your first stop in the Oblivion main quest. After you receive the Amulet of Kings, Emperor Uriel VII asks you to bring it to Joffre, the grandmaster of The Blades. Joffre resides in Weynon Priory, just south of Chorrol in the northwestern portion of the map.

To get here, you can either choose to follow the path that leads north around the central Imperial City, or fast-travel directly to the location. Your character already knows several main locations at the beginning of the game, and you are free to fast travel to most major settlements at will.

Join One Of The Many Oblivion Factions

The Fighter’s Guild, Mage’s Guild, Thieves Guild, And Dark Brotherhood

There are several main factions in Oblivion Remastered, almost all of which you can join as soon as you find a recruiter – or fulfill the requirements to join.

  • In most major cities, you will find local Mage’s Guild and Fighter’s Guild chapters. Head into these locations and talk with the local guildmaster to join up.
  • To join the Thieves Guild, you must commit a crime and go to jail, become friendly with any Beggar NPC to learn about the Thieves’ Guild existence, or learn about The Grey Fox and investigate on your own.
  • To join the Dark Brotherhood, you must kill any innocent NPC and then go to sleep, when you will be contacted by the Speaker of the Night Mother, Lucien Lachance.
  • The Imperial Arena is found in the Imperial City, and if you talk to Owyn, the Blademaster of the Arena, you can become an Arena combatant. Look for Owyn in the Bloodworks, to the left of the entrance to the Arena.

Pick Up Side Quests In Major Settlements…

Ask NPCs About “Rumors” To Find Side Quest Leads

One of the most beloved aspects of Oblivion is its side quests – you don’t have to follow the main quest in Oblivion at all, you can choose to ignore the main story and focus entirely on side quests and exploration on your own terms.

But to find side quests, Oblivion Remastered players must know which specific NPCs to talk to, which areas to visit, or learn about side quests by asking NPCs about “Rumors”. NPCs in different regions will provide leads for different side quests, so be sure to ask around whenever you enter a new area to pick up all the side quests Oblivion Remastered has to offer.

…Or Just Head In A Direction & See What You Find

Choose Your Own Path – Literally

Oblivion Remastered Where To Go First Imperial Prison

One of the best things about Oblivion is just how much the game encourages player choice and player freedom. You can ignore the main quest, you don’t ever have to pick up a side quest, and every non-important NPC can be killed. You can find new adventures around just about every corner – and ultimately, the choice of what to do first is up to you.

If you don’t want to follow any of these suggestions for where to go first in Oblivion Remastered, then don’t! Pick a direction, or something in the distance that looks interesting, and head towards it. Make up your own goals, role-play them in the game, and forge a path that feels right to you – you might be surprised just how much this game rewards you for doing whatever you want.
