Petanks are unique foes in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 that players can battle on a handful of the game’s maps, including the Ancient Sanctuary, Esquie’s Nest, and Stone Wave Cliffs. To defeat these foes, players must bring their health to zero before the Petank’s fourth turn. For those players who are struggling to take down Petanks in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, this guide contains several tips that may prove useful.
If a player fails to dispatch a Petank before it flees, they can force it to respawn by resting at any Expedition Flag in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33.

How to Catch Petanks in Clair Obscur Expedition 33
Upon approaching a Petank, players will find that it quickly moves away and prevents them from initiating a battle in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. To address this issue, players must force the Petank to run onto an illuminated spot on the ground, which will put an end to its movement. An illuminated spot can always be found in the vicinity of the Petank, and players may want to find one before they start chasing the foe.
Once an illuminated spot has been located, players should start approaching the Petank from angles that will send it towards the spot. Indeed, players can use their angle of approach to manipulate the direction in which the Petank flees, allowing them to push the foe onto an illuminated spot. As soon as the Petank comes into contact with the illuminated spot, players should hit it with a preemptive strike to start the battle with an advantage.
How to Beat Petanks in Clair Obscur Expedition 33
At the core of every Petank battle is one simple goal: get the foe’s health to zero before its fourth turn. This means that the general strategy is to maximize the party’s damage every turn. While it is expected that most players will already be attempting to employ that strategy during many of the game’s battles, here are some elements that they should consider if they need to improve their damage when fighting Petanks:
Attributes
Players who want to increase their damage should make sure to upgrade the attributes that scale their characters’ equipped weapons, which are marked with letters on the Upgrade Attributes menu. Players can also put points directly into Might to get some additional damage out of any weapon. If a character’s attributes are all out of whack, players can always use a Recoat to respec a character in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, or they can simply focus on leveling up and then put the points they earn towards the scaling attributes.
Weapons
Players should make sure to keep their weapons upgraded in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 by occasionally visiting the Curator in their Camps.
Pictos & Luminas
Pictos and Luminas can have a significant impact on a character’s ability to deal damage, and players should equip the effects that improve their offense. This includes effects that directly increase damage (like Augmented Attack and Augmented Counter) as well as those that grant AP (like Energising Start) and allow for Skills to be used more frequently.
Character Mechanics
It is imperative that players make effective use of each character’s unique mechanics if they hope to beat Petanks. This means focusing on building up and expending Overcharge with Gustave, making proper use of Stains with Lune, and constantly switching Stances with Maelle, and players can check the in-game Expedition Basics to get a refresher on these systems if needed.
Parry
Players should always try to parry a Petank’s attacks in order to get some additional damage out of Counterattacks. Notably, this additional damage can be quite significant if the party members in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 are equipped with the Augmented Counter Pictos/Lumina.
Break
Players can gain an additional round against a Petank by filling its Break Bar and stunning it for a turn. For full clarity, the Break Bar is located directly below the Petank’s health bar, and players should use a Skill that is capable of Breaking an opponent (like Gustave’s Overcharge, Lune’s Rockslide, and Maelle’s Fleuret Fury) when the bar is full.
Level Up
If a player is making good use of attributes, Pictos, character mechanics, and beyond but is still unable to deal enough damage to a Petank, they may want to level up a bit and try again. Indeed, the additional stats that can be upgraded every time a character levels up can dramatically improve their damage, making it much easier to bring down these foes.
Petank Gimmicks
Some Petanks have unique gimmicks that players must address while attempting to maximize their damage. Here are details about those gimmicks and how to deal with them:
- Armor: Some Petanks have the ability to shut down a party’s damage by gaining several armor charges. When that occurs, players should prioritize using Skills that hit multiple times or specifically target armor. Maelle’s Breaking Rules Skill is perhaps the best option here, though Gustave’s Lumiere Assault and Lune’s Thunderfall are also great options.
- Summoning: Some Petanks will summon Nevrons into the fight. While players may be tempted to ignore those enemies, they should actually do exactly the opposite, as the Petank will take almost no damage while the Nevrons are alive.
Petank Rewards in Clair Obscur Expedition 33
Players will receive a variety of rewards upon dispatching Petanks, including 5x Polished Chroma Catalysts, 1x Recoat, and 5x Colours of Lumina. While these items may not be quite as exciting as a new Pictos, weapon, or Tint upgrade, they are all very useful, and they definitely make Petanks worth pursuing.
