Until Dawn’s director revealed in a new interview that he had sworn off IP movies; however, it was the script for this movie that made him return to them.
Until Dawn’s Script Made Sandberg Think “This Would Be So Much Fun To Do”
During an interview with GamesRadar+, Until Dawn director David F. Sandberg opened up about the negative response to Shazam! 2 and how that led him to turn away from IP-based movies. Sandberg shared that “fans can get very, very crazy and very angry with you”, with them receiving “death threats and everything” after the release of Shazam 2. This made him think that IP-based movies “are just not worth it.”
However, that was until he saw Until Dawn’s script and the director was instantly hooked. Sandberg shared that he thought “this would be so much fun to do” after seeing the script, excited by the type of horrors he would have to execute. He felt he had to do it and hoped the audience would see what they were trying to do and like it.
Until Dawn’s director praised the writer’s work, calling the “time loop idea” where the night starts over again “brilliant.” Sandberg added that this concept helps players get the “feel of the game,” noting that they have replayed it several times, making new decisions each time.
For those wondering, the movie’s plot features Clover and her friends getting brutally murdered by a masked killer, with the night restarting every time they die. However, the crew remembers the night’s events and must make new decisions each time that will help change their fate.
The Until Dawn director concludes by stating that they “would’ve gotten a lot of critique” if they were trying to recreate the game, as the audience would’ve complained about it not being “as good” or not having “the same actors.” Sandberg explains that they would “just be in a losing situation” as they wouldn’t be able to “better the game.”
In other news, the Until Dawn Remake developer has “effectively closed”. What are your thoughts on Until Dawn’s director returning to IP movies thanks to its script? Let us know in the comments or on our new community forum!
